X-Men: Next Dimension      Back      Home
Sabretooth: Ah, the taste of blood...
Cyclops: Heart is what wins battles.
Professor Charles Xavier: As precarious as our situation was, I realized there was one thing that could make it worse: Magneto. After the downfall of his former kingdom of Genosha, Magneto had retreated from the world. With all that faced the X-Men already, I counted us fortunate that my one-time friend had not been drawn into the conflict.
Bastion: The irony is exquisite, isn't it? Your mutant gifts will be used to bring your kind to its knees. This is your true destiny: the harbinger of mutant extinction.
Wolverine: Got six reasons for you to walk away!
Rogue: (singing) This is gonna huuurt!
Havok: Cyclops isn't the only Summers kid with power!
Professor Charles Xavier: Farewell, my children... And good luck.
Professor Charles Xavier: Such was the severity of the situation, that no one noticed that Wolverine's wounds from the previous battle had not yet healed. And such is the calibre of the man known as Wolverine, that he pressed on, saying nothing at all to the others.
Professor Charles Xavier: A hasty council of war was held consisting of some of the most powerful mutants alive. Their mutual goal: end this new threat before it ends them. Nothing short of the fate of mutantkind hung in the balance.
Bastion: Ah, Homo Sapiens Superior. Come to take your--what is it again? Ah, yes, "your rightful place as the next step in human evolution". Your ascension would mean the death of humanity, and that is something I will not allow.
Toad: Your rotting corpse on ice! That be Toady paradise!
Magneto: Let naught stand before my might!
Juggernaut/Cain Marko: This sucks!
Bastion: Forge. Mutant with the ability to create any technological device his mind can conceive of... We're going to create wonderful things together, you and I...
Magneto: Humans, you're time has come...
Professor Charles Xavier: So an arrangement was made. The exact details were unclear, but one thing was for certain: none of this would fare well for those of us bearing an X. But if there is one thing the X-men can be counted upon to handle, it is adversity.
Cyclops: Magneto...
Magneto: There will be no war, today, X-Men. Today, we are all brothers.
Gambit/Remy Lebeau: Losin's not my style!

Bastion: Use a mutant to kill a mutant... Or, in this case, to kill all mutants.
Amazon.com Review
Playing X-Men: Next Dimension requires looking at the moves menu. A lot. If you're the kind of person who likes to memorize lists of moves--maybe even finds it fun as it gives you a sense of accomplishment--this game is for you. If you just want a game to play with some friends without cramming as if for an exam, you'd be better off with another fighting title.

But who doesn't love the X-Men? They're all represented here. The biggies (both good and bad): Wolverine, Rogue, Storm, and Cyclops, plus Magneto, Mystique, and Sabretooth. Other favorites also made the cut, including Gambit, Nightcrawler, and Forge. The backgrounds are terrific, and in a particularly impressive design element, you can drift into other landscapes from your original map. For example, if, while fighting from inside Dr. X's mansion, you throw your opponent out the window, you'll find yourself outside on the garden map. It's a good trick, and it almost makes the load time between games reasonable (rematches are quick, but reloads that change environments are painfully slow).

Each character has their own special "super meter" attacks, all of which befit the mutant power detailed in the comic books. Playing one-on-one with friends in versus mode, you can calibrate your character so practiced players have less energy for a more balanced game. These touches are appreciated. So while it's not as addictive as Tekken or any similar benchmark game, X-Men: Next Dimension still has appeal, with a reasonably well-thought-out game design and endearing character elements. --Jennifer Buckendorff

Pros:

  • Plenty of fan pleasers, including the chance to unlock good-old-days yellow and blue costumes
  • Really cool combo attacks, unique to each character
  • Voice work by Patrick Stewart
Cons:
  • Requires serious memorization of moves
