X2      Back      Home
[Pyro gets into a fight with some kids in the food court, and sets one's clothes on fire. Bobby puts it out with a jet of ice. Just as everyone is staring at them, they freeze. There is dead silence]
Rogue: Bobby, what did you do?
Bobby: I didn't do it.
Professor X: No, but I did.
[Professor X. wheels up]
Professor X: And the next time you feel like showing off... don't.
Policeman: Put the knives down!
Wolverine: I can't.
Professor X: Logan, my tolerance for your smoking in the mansion notwithstanding, continue smoking that in here, and you'll spend the rest of your days under the belief that you're a six-year-old girl.
Wolverine: You'd do that?
Professor X: I'd have Jean braid your hair.
Sgt. Lyman: Sir, the Cerebro device has been completed according to your specifications.
William Stryker: Good.
[Lyman looks at the monitor showing the room where the mutant children are being held prisoner]
Sgt. Lyman: If I may ask, sir, why are we keeping the children?
William Stryker: I'm a scientist, Sgt. Lyman. When I build a machine, I want to make sure it's working.
[Deathstrike extends her claws]
Wolverine: Holy shit.
Wolverine: [tosses Cyclops the keys to his motorbike] Your bike needs gas.
Cyclops: [tosses back the keys] Then fill it up.
Professor X: Eric what have you done?
Magneto: I'm sorry, Charles. I couldn't help it.
Professor X: What have you told Stryker?
Magneto: Everything.
[to Stryker]
Wolverine: If we die, you die.
[in the X-Jet, being pursued by two fighter jets]
Storm: I gotta shake them!
[she does a roll with the plane and drops it sharply towards the ground, then levels off]
Pyro: [green] Please don't do that again.
Wolverine: [green] I agree.
Magneto: [approaching an incapacitated Xavier] How does it look from there Charles? Still fighting the good fight? From here it looks like they're not playing by your rules... Maybe it's time to play by theirs!
[they're playing thumb war]
Bobby: You're so dead.
Rogue: No, you're dead.
[they get closer and Bobby leans in for a kiss]
Rogue: I don't want to hurt you.
Bobby: I'm not afraid.
Magneto: The war has begun...
Mitchell Laurio: Have a nice sleep, Lensherr?
Magneto: There's something different about you today, Mr. Laurio.
Mitchell Laurio: Yeah, I *was* having a good day.
Magneto: [gets up] No, it's something else...
Mitchell Laurio: Sit down.
Magneto: No.
Mitchell Laurio: [draws his club] I said, sit your ass down!
[He starts for Magneto, who holds up his hand. Laurio freezes]
Mitchell Laurio: [gasps] What are you doing?
Magneto: Ah, there it is...
[He lifts his hand, and Laurio lifts into the air]
Magneto: Too much iron in your blood!
[He draws a cloud of iron particles out through Laurio's skin, and squeezes them into a set of ball bearings. Laurio collapses to the floor, dead]
Magneto: Mr. Laurio, never trust a beautiful woman. Especially one who's interested in you.
Nightcrawler: The lord is my shepherd. I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of the death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.
Professor X: [voiceover] Mutants. Since the discovery of their existence they have been regarded with fear, suspicion, often hatred. Across the planet, debate rages. Are mutants the next link in the evolutionary chain... or simply a new species of humanity fighting for their share of the world? Either way, it is a historical fact: Sharing the world has never been humanity's defining attribute.
Magneto: [Magneto uses his power to stop the X-Jet from crashing] When will these people learn how to fly?
[last lines]
Dr. Jean Grey: [voiceover] Mutation. It is the key to our evolution. It is how we have evolved from a single-cell organism into the dominant species on the planet. This process is slow, normally taking thousands and thousands of years. But every few millennia evolution leaps forward.
Madeline Drake: This is all my fault.
Pyro: Actually they discovered that it's the male who carries the mutant gene and passes it on, so it's his fault.
Professor X: [connected to Cerebro] These lights represent every living person on the planet. These white lights are the humans... and these are the mutants. You see, Logan? We're not as alone as you think.
President McKenna: What do you need, William?
William Stryker: Just your authorization for a special operation.
President McKenna: And somehow I thought you were here to talk about school reform.
William Stryker: Funny you should say that, Mr. President.
[Rogue sees Magneto and Mystique talking, then they notice her]
Magneto: We love what you've done with your hair.
Wolverine: Who's this guy?
Rogue: This is Bobby, he's my...
Bobby: I'm her boyfriend.
[shakes Logan's hand and freezes it]
Bobby: Call me Iceman.
Wolverine: Boyfriend? So how do you guys...?
Bobby: Well, we're still working on that.
Pyro: That's it.
Bobby: Whoa. What do you think you're doing.
Pyro: I'm tired of this kids table shit, I'm going in there.
Rogue: John they told us to stay here.
Pyro: [looks back] You always do what you're told?
[leaves the jet]
Professor X: Oh, my God, William, this is your son! What have you...
William Stryker: No, Charles. My son is dead. Just like the rest of you!
Professor X: William...
William Stryker: Oh, please Xavier, don't get up.
[Wolverine approaches Stryker, chained to the outside of the dam, while carrying Artie in his arms]
William Stryker: Who has the answers, Wolverine? Those people? That creature in your arms? Huh? Huh?
[Wolverine looks at Artie, then takes off his "Wolverine" dog tag and throws it at Stryker's feet]
Wolverine: I'll take my chances with him.
[he turns and walks away]
William Stryker: One day, someone will finish what I've started, Wolverine!
[Artie looks over Wolverine's shoulder at Stryker, and sticks out his lizard tongue at him]
William Stryker: [shouts] One day!
Nightcrawler: You know, outside the circus, most people were afraid of me. But I didn't hate them. I pitied them. Do you know why? Because most people will never know anything beyond what they see with their own two eyes.
Storm: Well, I gave up on pity a long time ago.
Nightcrawler: Someone so beautiful should not be so angry.
Storm: Sometimes anger can help you survive.
Nightcrawler: So can faith.
Professor X: William.
William Stryker: Please, Xavier, don't get up.
[electronic static]
William Stryker: I call it the neural inhibitor. It keeps you outta here.
Professor X: What have you done with Scott?
William Stryker: Don't worry. I'm just giving him a little reeducation. Of course, you know all about that, don't you?
Professor X: William, you wanted me to cure your son. But mutation is not a disease.
William Stryker: You're lying. You were more frightened of him than I was. You know, just one year after Jason returned from your school... my wife - you see he resented us. He blamed us for his condition. So he would toy with our minds... projecting visions and scenarios into our brains. Well, my wife, in the end... she took a power drill to her left temple in an attempt to bore the images out. My boy, the great illusionist.
[crackling]
Professor X: For someone who hates mutants... you certainly keep some strange company.
William Stryker: Oh, they serve their purpose... as long as they can be controlled.
Professor X: You arranged the attack on the president.
William Stryker: You didn't even have to read my mind. You know, I've been working with mutants as long as you have, Xavier... but the most frustrating thing I've learned is that nobody really knows how many even exist or how to find them - except you. Unfortunately this little potion won't work on you, will it? You're much too powerful for that. Instead we'll go right to the source. Allow me to introduce mutant 143. The fluid secreted by his brain acts as a mind-controlling agent.
[machinery hissing]
William Stryker: But that's only where it begins.
Professor X: Jason. Oh, my God, William. This is your son. What have you done to him?
William Stryker: No, Charles! My son is dead... just like the rest of you.
[hissing continues, Xavier gasps]
Wolverine: Who am I?
William Stryker: If you knew the kind of person you used to be, the work we did together... People don't change, Wolverine. You were an animal then and you're an animal now. I just gave you claws.
William Stryker: I have found evidence of a mutant training facility in upstate New York.
Senator Kelly: [Mystique in disguise] This facility is a school.
William Stryker: Sure it is.
Storm: Kurt, it's about to get very cold in here.
Nightcrawler: I'm not going anywhere.
Professor X: For someone who hates mutants, you certainly keep some strange company.
William Stryker: Oh, they serve their purpose. As long as they can be controlled.
[Cyclops, under Stryker's mind control, attacks Jean, Magneto, and Mystique]
Dr. Jean Grey: Go! I'll handle him!
Magneto: [to Mystique] This is one lovers' quarrel we cannot get involved in, my dear.
Magneto: What's your name?
Pyro: John.
Magneto: What's your real name, John?
Pyro: Pyro.
[about Mystique]
Wolverine: She's good.
Magneto: You have no idea.
Bobby: [about to kiss Rogue] You won't hurt me.
Senator Kelly: [Mystique in disguise] Mr. Stryker, do you really want to turn this into some kind of war?
William Stryker: I was pilotin' Black Ops missions in the jungles of North Vietnam while you were suckin' on your mama's tit at Woodstock, Kelly. Don't lecture me about war. This already is a war.
Nightcrawler: Guten tag.
Wolverine: Who the hell are you? Who the hell is this?
Nightcrawler: Kurt Wagner. But in the Munich circus, I was known as The Incredible Nightcrawler!
Wolverine: Yeah, save it.
William Stryker: I've been working with mutants for as long as you have, Xavier. And in all that time, the frustrating thing is that nobody really knows how many even exist, or how to find them... except you.
[to Pyro]
Magneto: You are a god among insects. Never let anyone tell you different.
Storm: [about Nightcrawler's scars] So... What are they?
Nightcrawler: They're angelic symbols, passed on to mankind by the archangel Gabriel.
Storm: They're beautiful. How many do you have?
Nightcrawler: One for every sin. So quite a few.
Madeline Drake: We still love you Bobby, it's just this mutant problem is a little...
Wolverine: [Interrupting] What Mutant problem?
Madeline Drake: ...complicated.
Wolverine: She did make a choice, Scott. It was you.
Pyro: [grunts] I don't like uncomfortable silences.
Rogue: What are you doing?
[radio turns on and "Bye Bye Bye" by N'Sync Plays]
Pyro, Rogue, Wolverine, Bobby: [all groan] Ahh.
Madeline Drake: You have to understand, we thought we were sending Bobby to a school for the gifted.
Rogue: Bobby is gifted. You should see what he can do.
[Bobby proceeds to freeze the tea his mother is drinking]
[first lines]
Professor X: [voiceover] Mutants. Since the discovery of their existence they have been regarded with fear, suspicion, often hatred. Across the planet, debate rages. Are mutants the next link in the evolutionary chain or simply a new species of humanity fighting for their share of the world? Either way it is a historical fact: Sharing the world has never been humanity's defining attribute.
William Stryker: The tricky thing about adamantium is, that if you ever manage to process its raw, liquid form, you got to keep it that way, keep it hot. Because once the metal cools, it's indestructible. But you already know that.
Pyro: You know all those dangerous mutants you hear about in the news? I'm the worst one.
William Stryker: Sergeant, kill everyone that approaches; even if it is me.
Nightcrawler: There was so much shooting, such fear and then there was only pain. I could see it all happening, but I couldn't stop myself. It was like a bad dream. Perhaps he is testing me.
Storm: And before you were in the white house, what do you remember?
Nightcrawler: Nothing. I was here.
Storm: Jean?
[Invites Jean to read his mind]
Dr. Jean Grey: I'd rather get him back to the professor.
[during the attack on the mansion]
Colossus: I can help you.
Wolverine: Help them.
[Motioning to the children]
Mystique: No-one's left a scar quite like you.
Wolverine: What do you want, an apology?
Mystique: [bites him sexily on the ear] You know what I want.
[she transforms into Storm, then Rogue]
Mystique: But what do you want?
[Wolverine pushes her off him. Then she transforms into Stryker]
Mystique: What do you really want?
Wolverine: I want you to leave.
[Mystique exits, glaring]
Wolverine: [under his breath] Jesus.
Wolverine: How long have you been here?
Bobby: Couple of years, it's not so bad.
Wolverine: What about your parents, they just shipped you off to mutant school?
Bobby: Actually, my parents think this is a prep school.
Wolverine: Well, I guess lots of prep schools have their own campus, dorms, kitchens...
Bobby: Jets?
Dr. Jean Grey: Why do you need us?
Magneto: Mystique has discovered plans of a base that Stryker's been operating out of for decades. Only we don't know where it is. We thought one of you might.
Wolverine: The professor already tried.
Magneto: [sighs] Once again, you think it's all about you.
[he looks up. They follow his gaze and see Nightcrawler perched in the trees above them]
William Drake: What exactly are you a professor of, Professor Logan?
Wolverine: Art.
Professor X: William, you wanted me to cure your son, but mutation is not a disease.
William Stryker: You're lying! You were more frightened of him than I was. You know, just one year after Jason returned from your school, my wife... You see, he resented us. He blamed us for his condition. So he would toy with our minds, projecting visions and scenarios into our brains. Well, my wife, in the end, she took a power drill to her left temple in an attempt to bore the images out. My boy. The great illusionist.
[Jean and Storm are headed off to Boston to find Nightcrawler]
Professor X: I'm sending you the coordinates of his location right now
Storm: Lets just hope he cooperates...
Professor X: Yes, for his sake. Good luck.
Rogue: They told us to stay here!
Pyro: Do you always do as your told?
Wolverine: If you want to shoot me, then shoot me!
Dr. Jean Grey: Girls flirt with the dangerous guy, they don't bring him home... I married a good guy.
Wolverine: I can be the good guy.
Dr. Jean Grey: Logan, the good guy sticks around.
Rogue: Logan, come on. Let's go.
Wolverine: Go, I'll be fine!
Rogue: But we won't.
Wolverine: Who are you?
William Stryker: Don't you remember?
Bobby: [to Rogue] I'll try to find some clothes,
[to John]
Bobby: Don't burn anything.
Magneto: Charles Xavier. Have you come to rescue me?
Professor X: Sorry, Eric. Not today.
Magneto: To what do I owe the pleasure?
Professor X: The assassination attempt on the president. What do you know about it?
Magneto: Nothing. Only what I read in the papers. You really shouldn't have to ask, Charles.
Professor X: What's happened to you?
Magneto: I've had frequent visits from William Stryker. You remember him, don't you?
Professor X: William Stryker.
Magneto: His son, Jason, was once a student of yours, wasn't he?
Professor X: Yes. Years ago. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to help him... at least not in the way his father wanted.
Magneto: And now you think that taking in the Wolverine will make up for your failure with Stryker's son. You haven't told him about his past, have you?
Professor X: I've put him on the path. Logan's mind is still fragile.
Magneto: Is it? Or are you afraid of losing one of your precious X-men... old friend?
Professor X: Eric, what have you done?
Magneto: I'm sorry, Charles. I couldn't help it.
Professor X: What have you told Stryker?
Magneto: [sighs] Everything.
[gas emits]
Magneto: The war has begun.
Professor X: Scott!
Magneto: You should've killed me when you had the chance!
Storm: Can you teleport inside?
Nightcrawler: No. I have to be able to see where I am going, otherwise I could wind up inside a wall.
[to Wolverine]
Magneto: The professor thought you would be able to figure it out on your own. He gives you more credit than I do.
Bobby: This is Cyclops' car.
Wolverine: Oh, yeah?
[pops his middle claw, and uses it to turn the ignition]
Magneto: [to Professor X] You should have killed me when you had the chance!
Little Girl 143: I've got my eyes on you.
Rogue: John, knock it off.
Bobby: Will you stop showing off?
Pyro: What, for her? It's not my fault if your girlfriend's getting excited.
Bobby: I found some of my Mom's old clothes. I think they're from before I was born.
Rogue: [pauses, looking over the clothes] Groovy.
Madeline Drake: Bobby? Aren't you supposed to be in school?
William Drake: Do you know him?
[they look at Logan]
Bobby: That's Professor... Logan. Mom, Dad... there's something I need to tell you.
Professor X: You arranged the attack on the president.
William Stryker: And you didn't even have to read my mind.
[looking over Stryker's confidential papers]
President McKenna: How did you get these?
Professor X: Well, let's just say I know a little girl who can walk through walls.
Nightcrawler: Please don't kill me, I didn't mean to harm anyone.
Storm: Now why would people have gotten that impression?
President McKenna: What is that?
William Stryker: A jet.
President McKenna: What kind of jet?
William Stryker: We don't know-but it comes out of the basketball court.
William Stryker: If there's one thing I know more than anyone else, it's my own work. Seal the room. Shoot it.
Pyro: So, they say you're the bad guy.
Magneto: Is that what they say...
Pyro: That's a dorky looking helmet, what's it for?
Magneto: This "dorky looking helmet" is the only thing that's going to protect me from the REAL bad guys.
[takes his lighter]
Magneto: What's your name?
Pyro: [staring at his lighter in Magneto's hands] John.
Magneto: What's your real name, John?
Pyro: [flame appears in Pyro's hands] Pyro.
Magneto: Quite a talent you have there, Pyro.
Pyro: I can only manipulate the fire
[flame disappears into Pyro's hand]
Pyro: I can't create it.
Magneto: You are a god among insects. Never let anyone tell you different.
Wolverine: Got any beer?
Bobby: This is a school.
Wolverine: So that's a no?
Bobby: Yeah, that's a no.
Wolverine: Well, do you have anything other than chocolate milk?
Pyro: I'm driving.
Wolverine: Maybe next time.
Dr. Sebastian Shaw: Look, I think all this anti-mutant protesting underscored the genuine growing concern among most Americans. I think mutant registration...
Dr. Hank McCoy: But why stop there? Maybe it would be easier to round up mutants by the truckload. Or maybe you'd like all-out war, Mr. Shaw.
Dr. Sebastian Shaw: Oh, please.
Magneto: Quite a talent you have there, Pyro.
Pyro: [Flames appear in Pyro's hand] I can only manipulate the fire. I can't create it.
Magneto: You're a god among insects.

Pyro: So, they say you're the bad guy.
Magneto: Is that what they say?
Pyro: That's a dorky-looking helmet. What's it for?
Magneto: This "dorky-looking helmet" is the only thing that's gonna protect me from the real bad guys.
Nightcrawler: Excuse me? They say you can imitate anybody, even their voice.
Mystique: [as Nightcrawler] Even their voice.
Nightcrawler: Then why not stay in disguise all the time? You know, look like everyone else.
Mystique: Because we shouldn't have to.
Wolverine: I need you to read my mind again.
Professor X: Logan, the mind isn't just a box that can be unlocked and opened, it's a beehive with many...
Wolverine: Spare me the lecture.
Mrs. Madeline Drake: [to Bobby] Have you ever tried... not being a mutant?
Magneto: Charles Xavier. Have you come to rescue me?
Professor X: Sorry, Eric, not today.
[Stryker comes to interrogate Magneto]
Magneto: Ah, Mr. Stryker! Come to see that American tax dollars are keeping me comfortable?
Pyro: I don't like awkward silences.
[he turns on the car radio, N Sync's "Bye Bye Bye" comes on]
Pyro, Wolverine, Bobby: [groan] Awww...
Wolverine: You picked the wrong house, bub.
Magneto: A war is brewing...
Cyclops: Everybody stand back.
Dr. Jean Grey: Scott no. His mind is connected to Cerebro. Opening the door, could kill him and everyone his mind is linked to.
Storm: Wait, Kurt, I need you to take me inside.
Cyclops: Storm, who is this guy? Who are you?
Nightcrawler: My name is Kurt Wagner, but in the Munich Circus...
Storm: He's a teleporter.
Nightcrawler: I told you, If I can't see where I'm going...
Storm: I have faith in you.
Dr. Jean Grey: Don't believe anything you see in there.
Nightcrawler: Our father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in heaven.
Bobby: Have you ever wanted to be with someone so badly, but you can't?
[pause]
Bobby: I've seen how you look at Professor Grey.
Wolverine: Excuse me?
Bobby: Nothing.

X2 does a fine job of picking up where X-Men left off, giving fans more of what they liked the first time around. Under the serious-minded custody of returning director Bryan Singer, the second film of this Marvel comics franchise ups the ante on Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and the superhero mutants from the first film, pitting them against a mutant-hating scientist (Brian Cox) who's determined to wipe out the mutant race by tricking Xavier into abusing his telepathic powers. More a series of spectacles than a truly satisfying thriller, X2 introduces new mutant allies while giving each of the X-Men alumni--notably the temporarily helpful Magneto (Ian McKellen)--their own time in the spotlight. Well aware of the parallels between "mutantism" and virulent intolerance in the real world, Singer lends real gravity to the proceedings, injecting dramatic urgency into a continuing franchise that, in lesser hands, might've grown patently absurd. --Jeff Shannon
