The Jacket      Back      Home
Jack Starks: I'm running out of time.
Jackie Price: I don't care. You have to come back. I didn't ask for you, but now... you just have to come back.
Jack Starks: It's not like that. I don't have control over it.
Jackie Price: Well, get control.
[Jack goes back to 1992 and Jackie is alone in the bed in 2007]
Jackie Price: Come back to me, Jack.
Jack Starks: It is a fact. Bona fide and classified.
Jack Starks: What's wrong, Doctor, you look like you've seen a ghost...
Dr. Lorenson: How are we doing today?
Rudy Mackenzie: For me... that is a really difficult question Dr. Laurenson, because the world around me is *shrinking*... and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are comin' to see me today, and they're not bringing flowers which... just makes it real difficult to get organized.
Jackie Price: Jack Starks is *dead*.
[first lines]
Jack Starks: [Walking over to Iraqi child who's breathing hard] How's it going little man? You all right?
[Babak pulls out gun. Jack puts his hand up in a stop gesture but Babak shoots Jack in the head. Jack falls to the ground]

Jackie Price: There's nothing to steal, but don't be a jerk and take something anyway.
Jack Starks: No. I wouldn't.
[pause]
Jack Starks: My name is Jack.
Jackie Price: No. Let's not do the name thing, because it's - I don't wanna meet you. I may wanna help you tonight, but I don't wanna know you, really.
Dr. Thomas Becker: You can't break something thats already broken.
Jackie Price: You got somewhere you need to go?
Jack Starks: [long pause] I'm not sure.
Jackie Price: Well, let me ask you that again. This time, look around and consider your options. Have you got somewhere you need to go?
Jack Starks: Yeah, I do.
Jackie Price: Well, great. Get in.
Rudy Mackenzie: Long live the Organization for the Organized!
Jack Starks: They only recruit the best, McKenzie.
Jack Starks: When you're dead, the one thing you want is to come back.
Jack Starks: [whispering] I saw you. I know what you did to your patients. Years from now, I saw you. You told me about Piechowski... and Jackson MacGregor... and Ted Casey. You told me. All those guys stay with you. All of us. We all stay with you. We haunt you - *haunt* you.
[laughing]
Jack Starks: All of us. We haunt you. We... haunt... you.
Jack Starks: I was 27 years old the first time I died.
[letter Jack writes to Jean]
Jack Starks: Sometimes I think we live through things only to be able to say that it happened. That it wasn't to someone else, it was to me. Sometimes we live to beat the odds. I'm not crazy even though they thought I was. I live in the same world as everyone else. I just saw more of it, as I'm sure you have. They'll find my body tomorrow. You can check it out if you don't believe me. I've seen life after my death, and I'm telling you this because it's the only way to help you and your daughter have a better life of your own. Jean, you're gonna pass out one day smoking a cigarette and burn to death. Your daughter grows up living the same life you're living right now. And she misses you so much. Sometimes life can only really begin with the knowledge of death. That it can all end, even when you least want it to. The important thing in life is to believe that while you're alive, it's never too late. I promise you, Jean, no matter how bad things look, they look better awake than they do asleep. When you die, there's only one thing you want to happen. You wanna come back.
Jackie Price: How much time do we have?
Rudy Mackenzie: The less you freak, the less you'll trip out.
Jackie Price: How you doing?
Jack Starks: Better now.
Dr. Lorenson: Calm down, Mr. Starks.
Jack Starks: Stay calm, see, stay calm. Always ordering us to stay calm, be calm. Be calm! Be calm! They order *you* to order *me* to be calm. The fuck are we supposed to be calm? Look at this place. So, people, wake up! Okay? Orders come from the top only. Don't let them order you around, MacKenzie! Long live the Organization. Long live the Organization for the Organized!
Jack Starks: The real events that have happened to me have been fucked up, not my mind!
Jack Starks: Join the Organization! The Organization needs you! Fight the good fight!

When you put on The Jacket, prepare for a head-trip into fragmented reality. Coproducer Steven Soderbergh might have fared better with this mind-bender than British director John Maybury (who indulges an excess of heavy-handed "style"), but it's intriguing enough to hold your attention as Gulf War veteran Jack Starks (Adrian Brody) sustains a head-wound that results in amnesia and fragmented timelines. One involves Jack's apparent killing of a policeman, after which he's institutionalized and subjected to straight-jacketed experiments in sensory isolation (with Kris Kristofferson as the doctor in charge); the other is a possible future involving a nihilistic waitress (Keira Knightley) with connections to his past, and the discovery that Jack will die in four days if he can't solve the brain-teasing puzzle he's fallen into. The Jacket aspires to the cleverness of Memento and falls short of that target, but Brody gives this exercise in desperate disorientation a certain gravitas that keeps you watching as his tormenting visions begin to unravel. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brad Renfro and Kelly Lynch make the most of their small supporting roles. --Jeff Shannon
